- 01An island read from ten feet away
- Nothing here is hidden by a doorway, so the run is drawn to be read at ten or twelve feet rather than at arm's length. The outward face of the island takes a finished full-height panel — fluted, or a stone return down the end — instead of the thin scribe strip a builder leaves there, and the pull has to carry that far too.
- 02Main floors framed a foot taller than the village
- The newer streets were framed a foot taller, and the kitchens almost never go up to meet it. The gain is that foot plus the band a standard upper leaves short of the ceiling: closer to two feet on every wall. The honest part is what goes up there — the top tier needs a step stool, so it holds the platters that come out twice a year, on lift-up fronts.
- 03The old village around Dundas and Mill
- The houses near the core grew up around the mills in Smokey Hollow, and most have had a kitchen put on the back. Those wings usually have windows on two walls and a door on the third, so there is almost no wall to build against, and the sills sit below counter height. Either the run stops short of the glass or the sill is rebuilt to meet it.
- 04Extraction when the range is in the living room
- An island hood ducts down through the floor and out, and the joist direction decides whether that run is short or long and full of elbows. Noise is the other half of it: with nothing between the hob and the couch, a hood you would not notice in a closed kitchen gets switched off and left off. So the spec is the sone rating, not the airflow figure on the box.

Book a Consultation
Call the Ancaster office or send a note through the site and we will find a time that suits your week, evenings and Saturdays included. Before the appointment we ask a few questions about the room, the budget range you have in mind and how the space is actually used day to day.

We Come to You
A design consultant arrives at your home with a case of slab door samples in super-matte, gloss, textured melamine and veneer, plus gola and finger-pull sections you can put your hand into, hinges and runners to work, edge profiles and finish boards. We walk the room together, talk through what is not working now, and hold finishes up against your own floors, counters and light.
You see every finish and opening system in the room it is meant for, with no drive and no showroom floor.

Design & Estimate
If you want to take it further, we measure the room before the consultant leaves. The drawing is done back at the studio, not at your table: a computerized design with plan, elevations and 3D views to your room's real dimensions takes a couple of days to do properly. The estimate that comes with it itemizes cabinetry, surfaces, hardware and labour, so you can see exactly where the money goes.

Production & Coordination
Once the drawings are signed off, doors, boxes and drawer fronts go into production and the countertop template is booked. Deliveries and trades are sequenced so material does not sit in your garage for six weeks waiting on something else to arrive.
You get a production schedule with the dates that affect your household marked on it.

Professional Installation
Installers protect floors and stair runs before anything comes through the door, then set and shim the frameless boxes dead level and scribe the end panels to the wall. Fronts are adjusted at the end of the install until the reveals read consistently at 3mm across the run and the gola channel lines through from one end of the kitchen to the other.
You get a swept site each evening and one point of contact for the length of the installation.

Final Inspection & Completion
We walk the finished room with you and write down anything that is not right, from a hinge that wants a quarter turn to a filler that needs trimming. Nothing is called complete until that list is empty and you have signed off on it.
You receive care instructions, spare hardware and the warranty in writing.

No. Doors, colours, hardware and a drawer you can pull open all come to your kitchen, and the computerized design and written estimate follow within a couple of days, free. The City of Hamilton, and cabinetry on its own does not need one. Waterdown has been in the city since Flamborough was amalgamated in 2001. What catches people out is conservation: Grindstone Creek and the Smokey Hollow ravine sit in Conservation Halton's watershed, not the Hamilton Conservation Authority's, so a Hamilton address can still need a Halton approval.
Usually. A gloss front holds every fingerprint, and in a great room with afternoon sun raking along it you see them from the couch all evening. An anti-fingerprint super-matte lacquer, or a laminate textured to follow its printed grain, gives the same flat face without that. Gloss still earns its place out of the light, or on uppers nobody's hands reach.
Not on colour, and we will not pretend otherwise. A lacquered front never quite lands against an engineered floor, and the near miss reads worse than a difference you chose. So the samples go down on your own boards and the front is picked clearly warmer or clearly cooler. Painted trim we match from a chip rather than a profile, and a tall bank on old baseboard returns the base into the wall.
